Rock n Fun Kapolei

Games, Burgers, Fries, Milkshakes and… A BAR!  There’s fun for everyone at the new Rock N Fun, located at Ka Makana Ali’i in Kapolei.  Last night we were invited to the soft opening of this new venue that combines Fun Factory and Johnny Rockets.  Here on the island, we associate E. K. Fernandez with all things fun.  They’ve provided family entertainment through their Carnivals and Fun Factory game rooms for what feels like forever (since I was a little girl). So we were so excited to learn that they’d be collaborating with one of my “must-eat” restaurants whenever we travel to California.

I’m not too sure about the actual Grand Opening, but I’m assuming that the date will be within the next couple of weeks.

The food was so good! Kahele and the kids are definitely Burgers & Fries lovers, so they filled up til satisfied.  My favorite burger at Johnny Rockets is the patty melt and a chunk of my afternoon was spent craving it!  When I took my first bite it was exactly what I’d been wanting.  Of course the shakes were awesome. I love how the adults are able to get their grub and drink on while the kids are in watching distance playing arcade games.  It really is the best of both worlds.

Rock Island Cafe Waikiki

For years I’ve walked by this cafe and I’ve never tried it.  Today Kahele picked me up for lunch and I told him that I really wanted to try it out, so without knowing what to expect we headed over.  The minute I walked in I loved the place.  I didn’t even know how the food or the service was, but the decor and feel of the restaurant totally won me over.

I mean how cool is this place!  It’s like walking into a time machine and heading right back to mid-century.  All of the Elvis, Audrey, Marilyn, I love Lucy… amazing!  And they played the Grease soundtrack while we ate.  Now I think that all my meals should be eaten with the Grease soundtrack playing in the background 😉

Everywhere you turn there’s just some random piece of furniture, stuffed animal, quote, picture that you can’t help to smile at.  I mean, this chair right next to the popcorn machine?

This cute little bar that sits about 5 is located at the very back of the restaurant, sort of like… “hey we need a bar, but don’t have any room for one so let’s just stick baby in the corner”.

Not too sure if this stage is just for show or if they actually have live entertainment.  OMG if I find out that they have Karaoke and you’re able to perform on this stage I’m going back!

Another random bar/podium.  Not sure what it’s purpose is but it oddly fits right in with the restaurant.

All of the vintage posters made me want to watch some oldies.  I think this weekend I may have to make some time for Audrey or Marilyn.  Maybe, Seven Year Itch?  That sound good to me!

Our table had the retro decor and even had Trivial Pursuit cards to keep us busy while waiting for our food.  I wish we had more than an hour but I had to get back to work.

The food was really good. Nothing fancy but really tasty.  I had the Pizza with a Plantation Iced Tea and Kahele just had to have the Diner food- Bacon burger, french fries and a chocolate malt.

Be prepared that this restaurant is a little pricey for the simplicity of the food.  We ended up spending $43 on just what’s pictured above.  But for the experience, I feel like it was worth it.

This weather calls for some ramen

The weather here has been pretty gloomy lately.  Not that I’m complaining,  I love this cozy weather, it’s the closest we get to feeling like winter so it’s really nice.  I also love that it gives me a reason to eat some good ramen.  Yesterday I walked out of the office  and the sky was gray and the air had a little chill.  Instantly, I knew that I wanted something nice and warm and headed over to Goma Tei in the International Market Place.  I was really hungry so I ordered the Tan Tan Ramen and the mini Curry rice bowl.  Big mistake!  I was sooooo full.  I could’ve easily been satisfied with the Ramen alone but it’s a bad habit to order too much. I’ll learn someday 😉

Waikiki

Shorebird Restaurant Outrigger Reef Waikiki

On our last morning of our Waikiki stay we kept the kids home from school and had a beautiful breakfast at the Shorebird restaurant in our hotel.  I’ve gone to this restaurant a few times for dinner but never for breakfast.  OMG it is so pretty in the morning.  We had the best table with a gorgeous view of the beach and diamond head.  It was also overcast so the air was nice and cool.

I woke up to this!  I sat on our balcony for 15 minutes with the sky looking like this before the sun was fully up.  If it lasted longer I would’ve stayed out there all day.  So pretty.

Donut King Hawaii

I donut care what you think, I love donuts!!!!  This bakery is located down the road from Kuha’os school so when I was a little early to pick him up on Friday I decided to kill some time and get us both a snack.  I’d never been here before and went in planning to buy myself a plain glazed donut- that was until I saw that they carried Maple Bacon Donuts!!!! My absolute fave!  It was soooo yummy and fresh.  I ended up getting Kuha’o a chocolate covered donut with chocolate shavings.  I had a little sample of his and even that was good.

A couple of co-worker and I tried this place out for the first time.  Apparently this place has been here for a couple of years now and none of us knew about it.  This place is amazing , I can’t believe it took me so long to hear about this place.  I guess it’s expected that a lot of places in Waikiki aren’t frequently visited by locals which is probably the reason why I haven’t heard of it until recently.  However, after my experience I’ll definitely be spreading the word.

They have a little waiting area as soon as you check in.  I love the decor of this restaurant.  It has a sort of mid century modern feel which is my favorite!

And don’t even get me started on the food!  Huge portions and you can just tell that everything is made with fresh ingredients.  So yummy!

Why do these candy stores keep popping up all over the place?!  Don’t they know that sweet shops are my weakness?!  Last week the new International Market Place opened up in Waikiki.  For those of you who have been to Waikiki in the past you may remember the market place… well it’s nothing like it was before.  But we’ll just save that for another post.  Let’s just say that it’s not the same “bargain with the vendor” shopping like it used to be.  Now it’s expensive shops everywhere!  Among those expensive stores, that I probably won’t ever walk into, is this cutest candy shop called Sugarfina.  I saw one in San Francisco but never went in.

It’s so pretty and inviting that I couldn’t help myself and had to check it out.  It is pretty pricey, but your treats come in the cutest packaging and everything looks so beautiful. There’s such a wide variety of “boutique” style candies, I had to pick up a couple of things for the kids (and myself of course).  The saleswoman told me that what was unique about their shop is that they get their candy imported from all over the world.  I also love that this candy store seems to cater to grown-ups with their Champagne Gummy Bear, Peach Bellini Gummies, Pale Ale Pint Gummies and their Maple Bourbon Caramels just to name a few.

They also customize their labels for special events like weddings, showers and birthdays. So if you got the cash to spend this may be something perfect for your next party.

The Cutest Baby Shower

My cousin Pili is about to give birth to her son any day now.  Yesterday my Aunty Donna (her mother) threw her the cutest baby shower.  It was at a friends beach-house in Ewa.  First of all, the house is beautiful it’s like a modern day plantation style home right on the beach.  Secondly, the theme was the cutest sailor theme. Lastly, the food was AMAZING!  My Aunty had a private chef prepare all of the food, and a lot of it.

I wasn’t kidding when I said right on the beach.  It was a little muggy yesterday but just looking at this scenery was well worth a little heat.

There were these little stations set up where we were able to make personalized onsies, guess mom’s belly size and there were also cards at our seats where we could write words of advice for raising a boy.

Here’s my onsie I created.  I tried to keep the whole Beach Theme 🙂

Now let’s get to the good stuff…

I could hardly fit everything on one plate!  Everthing was done by Tamura’s Corporate Chef Aaron Siguenza.  Everything tasted die-licious.  If you’re looking to cater or even have a private Chef come to your home I highly recommend Tamura’s.

Here’s a pic that the older cousins took with my Gram’s.

Now we just need the baby to come along so that we can meet the little guy.  BTW  my niece (baby’s big sis to be)  insists that her brothers name is Lion!
