Rock Island Cafe Waikiki

For years I’ve walked by this cafe and I’ve never tried it.  Today Kahele picked me up for lunch and I told him that I really wanted to try it out, so without knowing what to expect we headed over.  The minute I walked in I loved the place.  I didn’t even know how the food or the service was, but the decor and feel of the restaurant totally won me over.

I mean how cool is this place!  It’s like walking into a time machine and heading right back to mid-century.  All of the Elvis, Audrey, Marilyn, I love Lucy… amazing!  And they played the Grease soundtrack while we ate.  Now I think that all my meals should be eaten with the Grease soundtrack playing in the background 😉

Everywhere you turn there’s just some random piece of furniture, stuffed animal, quote, picture that you can’t help to smile at.  I mean, this chair right next to the popcorn machine?

This cute little bar that sits about 5 is located at the very back of the restaurant, sort of like… “hey we need a bar, but don’t have any room for one so let’s just stick baby in the corner”.

Not too sure if this stage is just for show or if they actually have live entertainment.  OMG if I find out that they have Karaoke and you’re able to perform on this stage I’m going back!

Another random bar/podium.  Not sure what it’s purpose is but it oddly fits right in with the restaurant.

All of the vintage posters made me want to watch some oldies.  I think this weekend I may have to make some time for Audrey or Marilyn.  Maybe, Seven Year Itch?  That sound good to me!

Our table had the retro decor and even had Trivial Pursuit cards to keep us busy while waiting for our food.  I wish we had more than an hour but I had to get back to work.

The food was really good. Nothing fancy but really tasty.  I had the Pizza with a Plantation Iced Tea and Kahele just had to have the Diner food- Bacon burger, french fries and a chocolate malt.

Be prepared that this restaurant is a little pricey for the simplicity of the food.  We ended up spending $43 on just what’s pictured above.  But for the experience, I feel like it was worth it.

Pasta! A simple, easy and cheap recipe.

Last night for dinner I planned to warm up some left over stew that we had the night before but also wanted to throw together a little something on the side just in case someone wasn’t in the mood for leftovers.  What I threw together was a hit and everyone ended up eating it instead of the stew.  It was so simple and cheap (I had every ingredient at home to make it).

Ingredients:

1 box pasta.  I like angel hair, but any will do.

1 package of bacon

3/4 cup (a stick and a half) of butter

3/4 cup of Asiago cheese (or grated parmesan)

Garlic!  As much as you want.  I use a whole head.

Optional: Parmesan shavings as a garnish

Directions:

In a pan fry your bacon and set aside.

In a pot cook your pasta til al dente.

While your pasta is cooking add your butter and garlic to a pan and simmer for about 10 minutes until the garlic is tender.

Add your pasta to the butter and garlic and cook for a couple of minutes so that the pasta absorbs the butter.

Add bacon and  Asiago and serve.

So simple!

This weather calls for some ramen

The weather here has been pretty gloomy lately.  Not that I’m complaining,  I love this cozy weather, it’s the closest we get to feeling like winter so it’s really nice.  I also love that it gives me a reason to eat some good ramen.  Yesterday I walked out of the office  and the sky was gray and the air had a little chill.  Instantly, I knew that I wanted something nice and warm and headed over to Goma Tei in the International Market Place.  I was really hungry so I ordered the Tan Tan Ramen and the mini Curry rice bowl.  Big mistake!  I was sooooo full.  I could’ve easily been satisfied with the Ramen alone but it’s a bad habit to order too much. I’ll learn someday 😉

Shorebird Restaurant Outrigger Reef Waikiki

On our last morning of our Waikiki stay we kept the kids home from school and had a beautiful breakfast at the Shorebird restaurant in our hotel.  I’ve gone to this restaurant a few times for dinner but never for breakfast.  OMG it is so pretty in the morning.  We had the best table with a gorgeous view of the beach and diamond head.  It was also overcast so the air was nice and cool.

I woke up to this!  I sat on our balcony for 15 minutes with the sky looking like this before the sun was fully up.  If it lasted longer I would’ve stayed out there all day.  So pretty.

Donut King Hawaii

I donut care what you think, I love donuts!!!!  This bakery is located down the road from Kuha’os school so when I was a little early to pick him up on Friday I decided to kill some time and get us both a snack.  I’d never been here before and went in planning to buy myself a plain glazed donut- that was until I saw that they carried Maple Bacon Donuts!!!! My absolute fave!  It was soooo yummy and fresh.  I ended up getting Kuha’o a chocolate covered donut with chocolate shavings.  I had a little sample of his and even that was good.

cousins

This was such a fun night! This was about 4 years ago at my cousin Pili’s (red shirt back row) bridal shower.  At this point we had all had a lot to drink and were all pretty buzzed.  I remember getting to the point where I was was so emotional and filled with love for all of my cousins lol.  Kahele picked me up and I remember sticking my body out of the car and yelling “I love all of you!!!”  It was pretty epic.  Really fun group right here, and that’s not even the half of my girl cousins.

A couple of co-worker and I tried this place out for the first time.  Apparently this place has been here for a couple of years now and none of us knew about it.  This place is amazing , I can’t believe it took me so long to hear about this place.  I guess it’s expected that a lot of places in Waikiki aren’t frequently visited by locals which is probably the reason why I haven’t heard of it until recently.  However, after my experience I’ll definitely be spreading the word.

They have a little waiting area as soon as you check in.  I love the decor of this restaurant.  It has a sort of mid century modern feel which is my favorite!

And don’t even get me started on the food!  Huge portions and you can just tell that everything is made with fresh ingredients.  So yummy!

October! My favorite month!

Tomorrow is the first  day of my favorite month!  What’s so special about this month?  Well let’s see….

It’s Fall!  I know that September 22 was the first official day to mark the fall season, but October is the month where it really starts to feel like all of the holiday festivities are about to begin.  It makes me soooo happy.  Here’s a list of why I love October.

~ The weather starts to get a little cozier

~ Businesses and front porches everywhere begin to decorate for the holidays and everything starts looking so festive.

~ The smells!  I love fall scents. The apple and pumpkin spice candles… no words!

~ Pumpkin!  One of my favorite flavors.  Pumpkin pie, pumpkin crunch, pumpkin scones & pumpkin spice latte.

~ Halloween.  I’m especially excited for this Halloween because last year I was in the hospital trying to hold off on giving birth to Aria too early.  This year will be her first Halloween and I cannot wait.

~ Movies!  I have so many movies that I love watching during this time of the year.  Hocus Pocus, When Harry met Sally, Halloween (parts 1-100 lol), Beetlejuice, Clue, Hotel Transylvania, Adams Family & Monster House just to name a few.

~ Books.  There is no better way to read a book than when you’re snuggled in bed with the rain pouring outside your window.  Some of the books on my list for this month are

~ Red lipstick and fall makeup.  I don’t wear red lipstick normally but the changing of seasons gives me a reason to wear some darker shades of makeup which is always super fun.
